New national holiday proposed in Nucla

Affirmation Day, June 21

In an effort to get at what they believe to be the root of political, social and economic issues in the United States today, two brothers in Nucla are asking individuals, organizations and governments to sign a petition to proclaim June 21 Affirmation Day, in a re-affirmation of the words of Constitution of the United States.

“People in about 20 states have said they’re going to recognize it,” said Darryl Roberts, one of the brothers, in a recent interview with the Norwood Post. And, he added, “Naturita was the first municipality to sign the petition to create the new national holiday. Nucla was right behind them.” Tonight, the Norwood Town Board of Trustees will discuss a resolution to recognize the holiday.

Next Thursday, Roberts and others will convene at the Naturita Community Building at noon for a signing event to which area county commissioners, state representatives and municipalities have been invited. The public is invited, as well.

“[State Representative] Don Coram said he’ll attend,” said Roberts.

While Roberts touts the holiday, and the document stating the need for it, as non-partisan, the majority of hits on the Affirmation Day Facebook page tend towards right of center.

“I don’t want it to be partisan,” said Roberts. “The individuals who jumped on board first were very conservative, but I’m after anyone who is like-minded and agrees that, despite our political backgrounds, this is important. The Constitution made us what we are.”

So far, more than 1,000 people have joined the Facebook groups page, and nearly 600 have signed the petition, which is available on two sites, http://www.change.org/petitions/affirmation-of-the-united-states-of-america , and http://www.thepetitionsite.com/931/755/854/the-affirmation-of-the-united-states-of-america/. The affirmation letter can also be viewed on those websites.
